SUMMARY:Non-partisan Panel to Consider ‘How to Cope with Gun Violence’
DESCRIPTION:VERO BEACH—Incidents of gun violence continue to appear in the news media. Regardless of one’s political stance\, one thing most of us can agree on is that we’d like to keep our loved ones – and ourselves – safe from gun violence while in school and church\, shopping\, or on the street. \nThe Vero Beach Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host a non-partisan discussion\, “Coping with Gun Violence in Indian River County: What We Need to Know” at 1pm on Saturday\, Oct. 21\, in the Indian River County (IRC) Sheriff’s Office Administrative Building. Panelists will discuss ways that gun violence affects our community\, ways to limit violence\, and solutions to counter the effects of gun violence on our and others’ mental health. They will also provide information on the state laws regarding guns\, the rights covered under the 2nd Amendment\, and actions we might take with our government representatives. \nPanelists include Kristen Azari\, volunteer with Moms Demand Action; Wes Samons\, Executive Director Mental Health Collaborative of IRC; and Eric Flowers\, IRC Sheriff. \nThe meeting is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Only registered participants will be admitted. Go to the AAUW website (aauwvb.org) to register. \nThe Sheriff’s Office is in the Building H of the Administration complex\, located at 41st Avenue at 41st Street. Enter in the driveway off 41st Avenue. \nPlease check in at the door; only registered participants will be admitted. Registration deadline: October 18. \nIf you have questions about the event\, or want to submit questions for the panelists in advance\, please email AAUWverobeach@gmail.com. \nIMPORTANT NOTE: AAUW Vero Beach has a 501(c)3 classification and is legally obligated to remain nonpartisan at all times. As such\, our events\, programs and presenters must maintain a non-partisan stance by using neutral and unbiased language and by avoiding taking sides or showing favoritism toward any political group or ideology. We do believe that a nonaligned position is essential for maintaining fairness and objectivity in discussions. Please\, stick to facts\, avoid emotional language\, and ensure your communication is nonpartisan. This stance is essential for maintaining fairness and objectivity in discussions.

SUMMARY:Citizen Science: Together We Make the World Better
DESCRIPTION:Community members can help make the world a better place by partnering with scientists in “Citizen Science” efforts. \nKerryanne Monahan\, Master Instructor and Professor of Biological Science at Indian River State College\, will explain the important role the Citizen Scientist can play right here in our unique Treasure Coast environment at a Speaker Luncheon sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW)\, Vero Beach Chapter. The luncheon is 11:30am – 1pm at Regency Park\, 910 Regency Square\, Vero Beach. Cost is $25/person. Go to www.AAUWverobeach.org to register. \nMonahan is a National Geographic Fellow and has been a speaker for Ted Ed Talks. She also has helped design an Education Guide to accompany an inspiring documentary\, Path of the Panther\, which tells the story of the first female panther to cross the Caloosahatchee River and why that’s so important for the survival of the Florida panther. \nYou say you’re not a scientist? Not a problem. Don’t have a lot of time? Not a problem. Monahan offers numerous ways that ordinary community members of all ages and interests can help in some way — and when we all lend a hand\, our efforts can add up to making a big difference. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.

SUMMARY:Waldo's Secret Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:“Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is a tribute to Waldo Sexton whose family and homestead is hosting this special art event this month on December 16th and 17th. Although you can experience Waldo’s found art throughout all of his local landmarks like the Ocean Grill and the Driftwood Inn\, the artist’s home is a treasure trove of his eclectic style. Waldo Sexton would have loved this art show on his homestead with artists lining pathways and tucked under shaded patios. Every turn in the path through the lush jungle garden reveals a new surprise placed with purpose by the artist. Spanish tile\, ornate iron gates\, a lantern\, a bell or a bronze statue calls out to the artist in all of us. Visitors will enjoy the work of thirty local artisans creating works in sculpture\, jewelry\, painting\, furniture\, fabric\, glass and metal. Events during the two days will feature readings by Sean Sexton from his new book “Portals”\, salsa dance performances\, classical guitar and more. There will also be gourmet food available from Dolly’s Table and a selection of craft beer from Sailfish Brewery. “Waldo’s Secret Art Walk” is open from 11am to 5pm\, Saturday and Sunday\, December 16-17. SUMMARY:AAUW Book Review Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Education of an Unintentional Racist \nIf you’re born into a community and cultural environment that’s “like a stroll through the Norman Rockwell Museum\,” how do you learn to relate to a more diverse world? \nCarol Ludwig\, Executive Director of the Center for Spiritual Care in Vero Beach\, will consider that question as she reviews “Waking Up White: and Finding Myself in the Story of Race\,” by Debbie Irving at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11:30am on Monday\, Jan. 8\, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College\, 6155 College Lane\, Vero Beach. \nWaking Up White is the book Irving wishes someone had handed her decades ago. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions\, she offers a fresh perspective on bias\, stereotypes\, manners\, and tolerance. As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness\, being a good person\, and wanting to help people of color\, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race. She also explains why and how she’s changed the way she talks about racism\, works in racially mixed groups\, and understands the antiracism movement as a whole. \nCarol Ludwig\, spiritual director\, supervisor\, teacher and retreat leader\, presents widely in the U.S. and overseas. Carol was formed in the contemplative-evocative style of spiritual direction through the Washington Theological Union\, the Shalem Institute and Mercy Center. Carol has served on the faculties of Audire\, Loyola (New Orleans) University\, Mercy Center\, Sacred Heart University and the Shalem Institute. \nThe Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public\, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community. \nAAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization\, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy\, education\, and research. We support scholarships\, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.
