Toxic Algae & You. ORCA presents special showing of Toxic Puzzle

Please join the Ocean Research & Conservation Association on February 4th for a special showing of Toxic Puzzle – Hunt for the Hidden Killer. This award winning documentary follows scientist Dr. Paul Cox and his team as they investigate linkages between toxins produced by cyanobacteria (better known as toxic blue-green algae) and the neurodegenerative diseases ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Cyanobacteria have been in the news here in Florida, with major blooms in Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee River, St. Lucie Estuary and Blue Cypress Lake. This has led to concerns about the possible impacts of these blooms on the health of local residents. Toxic Puzzle details the science behind some of these concerns and also provides hope, as it describes how studies led to the Ogimi Village in Japan. The abundance of an amino acid in the local diets points the way to a possible cure.
