Books as Weapons in ‘War of Ideas’

February 5 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Free

The Librarian of Burned Books has been called “a novel that should be read by anyone and everyone who cares about books in a day and age where books and their subject matter are once again being challenged by school boards and parents throughout the country.”

Inspired by the true story of the Council of Books in Wartime — the WWII organization founded by booksellers, publishers, librarians, and authors to use books as “weapons in the war of ideas” — The Librarian of Burned Books is an unforgettable historical novel, a haunting love story, and a testament to the beauty, power, and goodness of the written word.

Lenora Ritchie, Vice President, Carter Global Consulting, will review The Librarian of Burned Books, by Brianna Labuskes, at a Book Review Breakfast sponsored by the AAUW (American Association of University Women). The breakfast is 9:30-11:30am on Monday, Feb. 5, in the Richardson Center of Indian River State College, 6155 College Lane, Vero Beach.

Lenora Ritchie is an accredited communicator and fundraising professional with 30 years of experience in public relations, fund development and foundation management. Her work as a consultant is grounded in a career spent on both sides of the philanthropic fence — fundraising and grant-making. Lenora’s focus at Carter is on philanthropic strategy, board development and governance, and organizational planning. Carter Global Consultants Carter consultants work to advance philanthropy worldwide by counseling nonprofit organizations in the areas of fundraising, organizational planning, and governance.

The Book Review Breakfast is free and open to the public, although donations of new or gently used children’s books are encouraged. The books are used to stock the local AAUW’s four “Little Free Libraries” for children in the community.

AAUW-Vero Beach is a 501(c)3 charitable organization, whose purpose is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. We support scholarships, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County.
