Lydia M. Batey, 97, of Vero Beach, passed away on Aug. 27, 2016, at Angel Care at Vero Beach assited living facility.
She is survived by her daughter Mae Hawkins; her son Robert M. Batey; grandchildren Sean and Kyle Hawkins, and Lisa Batey and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert “Bob” Batey, her sister Jessie Pittington, and her parents, Dr. and Mrs. A.R. Mead.
Batey was born on May 29, 1919, in Delaware, Ohio, and moved to Florida in 1931 where she graduated from Florida State University and married her husband of 55 years, Robert, “Bob” Batey.
She taught elementary school in Gainesville, and with her husband, helped establish Faith Methodist Church and Southwest Methodist Church, where she served as the organist. She was also an active member of the Gainesville Garden Club.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016 at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Archer, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, 51 Childrens Way, Enterprise, FL 32725 Attn: Development Dept.
