John E. ‘Jack’ Burnham, Vero Beach

John E. “Jack” Burnham, of Vero Beach, passed away on Sept. 3, 2016.

He is survived by his sister Barbara Burnham Fishwick of Fort Pierce.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret in 2015, and two sisters, Eleanor Garvey of Springfield, Mass., and Dorothy Zulli of Phoenix, Ariz.

Burnham was born in Springfield, Mass., in 1932. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from the former Springfield Technical High School in 1950.

Burnham enlisted in the U.S Navy and served for three and a half years, most of that time spent as a sonarman aboard the U.S.S. San Pablo (AGS-30). After discharge, he attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated from Western New England University.

He served for many years as controller of Alcoholism and Drug Services of Western Massachusetts. Following his retirement in 1994, he and his wife, Margaret moved to Vero Beach.

During his retirement, Burnham volunteered for many years at the Salvation Army and served 15 years as a volunteer tax preparer for the IRS VITA program and the AARP program. He was a long time member of the Vero Beach Power Squadron.

A Committal Service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at Our Savior Lutheran Church Memorial Garden, Vero Beach. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home, Vero Beach. An online guestbook may be signed at www.coxgiffordseawinds.com.
