Mildred Patricia Waalewyn, 91, of Vero Beach, passed away on Feb. 22, 2016, at her home, after a long battle with cancer. Her many friends were very helpful.
She is survived by her brother John Waalewyn (Martha) of New Market, N.H.; nephews Kaarl Waalewyn of Haverhill, Mass., and his two children, Brittany and Austin Waalewyn, and Jan Waalewyn (Joanne) of Gloucester, Mass. and Hillsboro Beach, Fla.
Waalewyn was born in West Palm Beach, Dec. 8, 1924, and the family moved to Caribou, Maine, in 1930, then to Houlton, Maine in 1933, where she grew up.
After graduating with high honors from Houlton High School, she went to work for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad as Secretary to the Manager. After 10 years, she retired and went to work for the Aid Department of the Federal Government, serving overseas for 20 years in different posts in Iraq, Pakiston, Uganda and Nigeria in Africa and then on to Taiwan and Thailand in the far East. She was caught in the unrest in Laos and reassigned to Washington, D.C. There she retired to take care of her mother in Pompano Beach.
