Sebastian man arrested for threatening roommate with box cutter

SEBASTIAN — A Sebastian man claims his roommate attacked him with a box cutter on Sunday evening and threatened his life, according to a police report.

Michael Pophal, 54, of the 100 block of Crawford Drive in Sebastian, now faces felony charges of aggravated assault and battery on a person over 65.

The victim told authorities he was relocating his roommate to a different room due to an insect infestation when the roommate came up behind him, held an open box cutter to his throat, and said, “Kill me or I’m going to kill you.”

Pophal approached the victim a second time with the weapon when the victim began to fight back, authorities said. The victim suffered a cut to his ankle from the struggle, according to the arrest affidavit.

Authorities found Pophal outside behind the residence, bleeding from self-inflicted wounds to his wrists when they arrived.

Pophal was transported to the Sebastian Medical Center for clearance before being booked into the Indian River County Jail. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond.
