INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — While crews finish up the second of three phases of construction at Citrus Elementary, the third phase is about to get started. The School Board approved a contract to get the site work done over summer before school starts anew in August.
The School District is building a new 16-classroom wing to replace portables onsite.
School Board member Shawn Frost said he supported the contract with Proctor Construction because it’ll be good to get the kids out of portables and into permanent space.
Moving forward with the preliminary site work while school is out will save the District approximately $100,000, Assistant Superintendent of Finance Carter Morrison told the School Board. That savings is a combination of not needing fencing and not having to pay general conditions.
The $200,000 contract will be paid for through the left over contingency funds from the second phase of the Citrus Elementary project, namely the construction of the school’s new cafeteria.
By utilizing the left over contingency funds, the District can push up the time table for the third phase, explained Director of Facilities Scott Sanders.
If the funds weren’t available, Sanders said, the project would have to wait until the fall, which would have necessitated the extra $100,000 for fencing and other conditions.
