Markine Ostling, 90, of Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, and Little Switzerland, N.C. passed away on May 31, 2015, at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.
She passed peacefully while being comforted by her three children.
She is survived by her daughter Tamara Dee of Vero Beach; two sons John Dexter of New York City, N.Y., Charles Hoglund of Redington Beach, Fla.; granddaughter Rebecca Ostling Mims of Sharpsburg, Ga.; and five great-grandchildren.
She was born on July 9, 1924 in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Mark Ernest Traynor and Ola Wilmore Traynor. She graduated from High School in Swartz Creek, Mich., where she grew up on a farm. During WWII she found herself milking cows every day and building machine guns at the GM plant as a “Rosie the Riveter.”
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in 1946. She later graduated from Northwestern University medical school in 1948 and became a registered Physical Therapist where she worked with physically handicapped children of the Polio epidemic of 1950.
She married “The Love of Her Life” Dr. Burton Charles Ostling in 1952. They moved to Avon Park, Fla., in 1955 where they lived, as she often said “a fantastical life,” and raised a family for 40 years. In 1995 she moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., continuing to spend her summers in Little Switzerland, N.C., two of Markine and Burt’s favorite destinations.
She moved to Vero Beach in 2012 where she lived until her passing.
