INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A South County man was arrested Friday afternoon after firing a gun at another man in the victim’s garage, according to authorities.
At least two juveniles were inside the residence at the time of the incident, according to the police report.
Jeffrey Haynes, 24, of the 700 block of 11th Avenue SW in Vero Beach, now faces felony charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault, and one misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm in public.
The shooting occurred after an altercation between Haynes and the victim. The victim told police he refused to “go out and get money” with Haynes because he believed Haynes “wanted to commit a robbery,” according to the report.
Haynes got angry and threw a punch at the victim and missed, the report states. The victim then punched Haynes back, prompting Haynes to leave the property and return with a gun.
Haynes told authorities the victim and the victim’s brother “jumped” him.
Two juveniles inside the home told authorities they saw Haynes approaching the house with a black handgun. Police recovered a gun from the scene meeting the description given to police by the victim. Authorities also observed one spent shell in the victim’s garage and what appeared to be a bullet hole in the garage wall leading into the victim’s residence.
Haynes at first denied having a gun due to his status as a convicted felon, but later told police he did fire a gun two times in order to “scare” the victim, according to the report.
Haynes is being held in the Indian River County Jail in lieu of $305,000 bond.
