2 arrested in Fellsmere after shooting cow, car, home

FELLSMERE — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrested two people following an investigation of an incident in Fellsmere Monday evening that left a 2-year-old cow injured and a car and home damaged.

Around 8 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call of shots being fired in the 15000 block of 93rd Street in Fellsmere, according to authorities. The caller stated that his vehicle had been struck by a bullet and rounds continued to strike near his house and property while he spoke with the 9-1-1 operator.

With the assistance from the Fellsmere Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office stopped a white Ford van leaving the area and believed to be involved.

Inside of the van, deputies located SKS and M-4 style rifles and a 12-gauge shotgun, according to the Sheriff’s Office. More than 100 spent shell casings were located in the area.

Deputies arrested Adrian Zamarripa, 18, and Martin Corona, 20, and they face charges of culpable negligence and discharging a firearm in public.

During the shooting incident, the caller’s vehicle, home, and two-year-old Holstein cow were struck by bullets, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office crime scene unit responded to recover evidence of the crime, according to authorities.

A local veterinarian was contacted and is being consulted to determine if the cow will live or will have to be euthanized.

“The reckless shooting by Zamarripa and Corona is completely inexcusable,” said Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar. “We encourage gun safety at all times, asking that anyone who intends to discharge a weapon be sure that they are in a safe place and are shooting in a safe direction.”

Both men told investigators they did not know the residence was behind the area that they were shooting into, according to the statement released by the Sheriff’s Office.
