‘Read Across the Field’ Moonshot Moment event set for April 18

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The public is invited to show support of the Moonshot Moment goal, to reach 90 percent literacy by the end of third grade by 2018, by attending the second annual “Read Across the Field” event scheduled for April 18 at 8 a.m. at the Sebastian River High School Stadium.

Participants will line up on the Sebastian River High School football field in the shape of the Moonshot Moment rocket. Line up begins at 8 a.m.

The Sheriff’s helicopter will fly overhead at 8:30 a.m. to take the aerial photo. Everyone will be off the field by 8:45 a.m. and the Bill Wilson All-County Elementary Track Meet begins at 9 a.m.

More than 600 people participated in last year’s inaugural event on April 23, 2014, lining up on the field in the shape of the Moonshot Moment rocket logo.

The event is open to everyone young and old. More than 600 people are expected on the field. Moonshot Sports teams will participate with their coaches and families, and will wear uniforms. Participants should bring a book to wave during the aerial photo.

There is a literacy crisis in Indian River County and in the nation. Children who do not read on grade level by the end of third grade will have a one in seven chance of success. The “Moonshot Moment” is the name of the County’s goal to have 90 percent of children reading on grade level by the end of third grade by 2018. Together, the community will transform the next generation.
