SEBASTIAN — For two weeks, flags and cones along Barber Street have reminded drivers of the recently reduced speed limit: it’s 30 mph. Now the flags and cones have been removed and radar guns and two traffic counters are in operation.
According to City Engineer Frank Watanabe, the next step will be up to the public – the residents along and near Barber – who came to the Jan. 28 City Council to express grave concern, and fear for the safety of their children and pets, because of the raceway they say the popular thoroughfare has become.
Resident Linda Jareb served as the group’s spokesperson and maintains a Facebook page and an ongoing petition drive.
Watanabe says when the residents organize a public meeting, the people, the City and the Police Department together can discuss ways to handle the problem.
