Man faces burglary, battery charges over grapefruit

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A South Vero man is currently facing several charges including burglary and aggravated battery after he allegedly lost his temper over grapefruit thrown into his yard.

Eugene Damboise, 60, of the 800th block of 8th Ct. SW, Vero Beach, was arrested Wednesday evening after his neighbor reported Damboise broke into his home and struck him several times in the head and arms.

The victim told police he believes the outburst was due to grapefruit the victim had removed from his own driveway and tossed in the area of Damboise’s trailer located on the same lot.

When the victim confronted Damboise with a wooden club covered in barbed wire, Damboise allegedly left the scene, according to the arrest report.

In addition to the injuries sustained to the victim’s head and arms, there was also damage reported to his cell phone and other property.

Damboise is currently being held in the Indian River County Jail in lieu of $11,500 bond and faces charges of felony aggravated battery on person over 65, felony burglary of a dwelling with assault and battery, misdemeanor criminal mischief, and hindering communication to 911.
