First IRC Sheriff’s Office female deputy with 30 years of continuous service retires

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Last Wednesday, a retirement celebration was held at the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in honor of Deputy Karrie Spooner. Deputy Spooner began her career with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 10, 1985. Over the course of three decades, Deputy Spooner received more than 60 written commendations to Indian River County Sheriffs R.T. “Tim” Dobeck, Gary Wheeler, Roy Raymond, and Deryl Loar. Deputy Spooner also received awards from all four sheriffs she served under.

In February of 1986, Doris Chester wrote Sheriff Dobeck to thank Deputy Spooner for her assistance with a traffic related problem in Tropic Villas North. Deputy Spooner would go on to a long and successful career in the traffic unit. In February of 1994, Charles Gault wrote Sheriff Wheeler to commend Deputy Spooner on the way she handed a stolen vehicle case. The vehicle was ultimately recovered the same day, but he wanted to make sure Deputy Spooner was recognized for being so courteous and helpful. During Sheriff Wheeler’s tenure, he presented Deputy Spooner with the Grand Cordon award, the Lifesaving award, and the Technical award.

In April of 2004, Sheriff Roy Raymond received a letter of commendation for Deputy Spooner from Fawn Peters. Deputy Spooner’s professionalism in handling a serious crash involving two young men moved Ms. Peters to write, “I feel good knowing that there are deputies out there like her.” Most recently, in October of 2013, current Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar received a letter from the Department of Homeland Security Resident Agent in Charge Rachel Cannon commending Deputy Spooner. RAC Cannon wrote, “You have quite an exemplary and dedicated officer in Deputy Spooner, and I greatly appreciate her professionalism.”

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar stated, “We are proud of Deputy Spooner and her accomplishments over the past 30 years. As the first female deputy to serve the citizens of Indian River County for three consecutive decades, we are impressed by her dedication and loyalty. We wish Deputy Spooner the best in her retirement.” Deputy Spooner will be honored with a proclamation by the Indian River County Commissioners in an upcoming ceremony in February.
