Thirty competitors braved Saturday’s chilly temperatures to compete in the third annual Shore Lb. Bodysurfing Competition at South Beach Park, featuring Old School and Handplaner (a mini-surfboard strapped to the hand) divisions.
The event was created by former Vero Beach lifeguard Chris Ellison to coincide with the launch of shore lb., the watersports clothing company he started with wife Tiffany. And, as with August’s Shore Lb. Throw Down skim board competition, funds would benefit the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association.
“We have an incoming swell with an incoming tide; it’s going to be that way all day long,” said Ellison, noting that waves would continue to increase in size as a result.
A few entrants had donned wetsuits, but at 77 degrees, the water was warmer than the air temperature, leaving spectators the ones who were bundled up; appreciating the warmth of the bright sunshine to offset the windy conditions.
“That dude is good; he’s using what my father calls the proper old school,” said Jessie Knapp, watching as one man bodysurfed with hands down to his sides. Styles vary, with others positioning both hands forward, or using a combination of the two. Judging is based on a combination of wave selection, ride distance, and any tricks.
