Johanna “Jo” Kromhout, 94, of Vero Beach, passed away on Aug. 19, at her home in Vero Beach.
She is survived by her son Alexander “Lex” (Malinda Crockett); daughter Charlotte (Jan Koster); grandsons Clint Kromhout and Benjamin Koster; great-grandsons Reid and Cord; and her rescue-Labrador and two notorious cats.
She was preceded in death by her husband D.L. “Dees” Kromhout in 2000.
Kromhout was born on March 12, 1920 in Kediri, Indonesia (then: Dutch East Indies). She grew up in Indonesia and in the Netherlands, where she married in 1943. She immigrated with her husband and young son to Vero Beach in 1948, where she has lived ever since.
In Vero Beach, her family was known for their flower farm, later the ranch and lastly their citrus groves.
Kromhout was mainly a homemaker. She cared for her family in a loving and conscientious way that will always be fondly remembered and cherished by her children and also by their friends. Always an animal lover, she was one of the founding members of the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River, back in the early 1950s.
In the USA, England and the Netherlands, she was known for her large Mastiff dogs and her interest in that breed.
At her own request, there will be no memorial services.
