SEBASTIAN — Indian River County Fire Rescue is investigating after an abandoned home on Fleming Street caught fire Tuesday evening, causing the street to be temporarily closed.
Sebastian Police Ofc. Steve Marcinik, a spokesman for the department, said the fire involved an unoccupied structure located in a wooded area. He added that the home has been abandoned for “many, many” years.
Ofc. Marcinik said there have been unsubstantiated reports of juveniles in the area of the fire shortly before the fire started. He also said there had been a storm at about the same time as the fire but there was no lightning reported.
Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Cory Richter said they are investigating it as a suspicious fire.
No injuries were reported.
Fleming Street between Harbor Point Drive and Arega Street was closed due to fire rescue vehicles and equipment. The road was expected to reopen sometime around 9 p.m., according to Richter.
Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area if possible.
