Joan Brown Higgins, 88, of Vero Beach, passed away on June 17, 2014.
Her death was a painless, quiet, and sleepy event. At her side was her husband, best friend and lover for nearly 60 years, Bill Higgins.
She is survived by her husband; son, William Bradfield Higgins (Michelle); two grandchildren, Christine Emily and Megan Joan Higgins and their mother Sheryl Higgins.
Her sister, Priscilla B. McCullough, from Vero Beach, preceded her in death.
Higgins was born on May 3, 1926, in Yonkers, N.Y., to Harry Collins Brown and Helen Bradfield Brown. She attended The Scarborough School and then went on to Bryn Mawr College, Penn.
Early in her career she worked for advertising agencies in New York City including the Benton & Bowles Agency. Later, Higgins did public relations projects for Rums of Puerto Rico, and other National organizations. She then joined the sales staff of CUE Magazine in Manhattan.
Higgins had rented an apartment on Bank St. in the West Greenwich Village. There she met her husband Bill Higgins. He was Cinematographer for a fortune 500 Company. They moved out of New York City to Bronxville N.Y., buying three homes before moving on to Princeton, N.J. where they lived for 28 years.
She joined the American Hospital Association in Princeton and became the Assistant Regional Manager for New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
She and her husband had traveled extensively, for business and pleasure throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, England and Ireland. Higgins was an avid reader when she and Bill lived in Castaway Cove, Vero Beach for 24 years.
Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Indian River County at P.O. Box 644, Vero Beach, FL 32961. There will be a Celebration of Life in the near future at the Brennity campus in West Vero Beach.
