VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Police Department is looking into a possible credit card scam, according to their facebook page.
Several days ago, a resident received a telephone call from a person claiming to be a representative of a well-known credit service, according to authorities. The person stated that he was calling to verify a recent purchase involving the resident’s PayPal account.
The caller knew her name, but offered no additional information to verify who she was, according to authorities. The resident recognized the call as a possible scam and promptly disconnected the call before volunteering any of her personal information. The resident had not made any recent purchases involving PayPal and has not received a return call.
Police are urging residents to remember to verify the identity of the caller whenever receiving a telephone call from anyone requesting personal information.
If residents are not familiar with the company that is calling, listen and ask for details regarding the purchase or account they are calling about. If the information does not match your account or recent purchases, request that the caller give you a call back telephone number, or simply hang up.
The obvious scam is that the caller may be attempting to obtain your full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, account number or PIN number.
Authorities urge you never volunteer this information. If they are a legitimate company they will already have it and they easily volunteer it to you for verification.
