Plane lands on SR 60 west of I-95

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A private plane on its way to the Florida Keys from Atlanta, Ga., made an emergency landing on State Road 60 west of Vero Beach near mile marker 17 Friday morning.

According to authorities, the pilot decided to land after discovering he had the wrong fuel tank attached and needed to swap it out with another tank.

The plane was not damaged and there were no injuries reported. Once the fuel tank is replaced and the pilot receives permission, he plans to take flight again, according to authorities.

The pilot is currently waiting for officials from the FAA to inspect the plane and make a decision as to whether the plane can take off.

Why the pilot did not go to the Vero Beach Municipal Airport to make the tank swap was not immediately known. The pilot intended to land in Ft. Pierce to refuel but instead made an emergency landing on State Road 60, west of Interstate 95.

The pilot’s identity has not been released.

The plane was transporting a family consisting of two adults and two children from Atlanta, Ga., to the Florida Keys, according to officials on scene.
