INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – At 6:30 p.m., Burkeen said the brush fire had been contained.
No damage was caused to any structures and 9th St. SW is open.
VERO BEACH — A fast moving brush fire posing a threat to a miniature golf complex, caused emergency services to shut down 9th St. SW, just south of Oslo road at approximately 4:45 p.m.
At approximately 5:05 p.m., Asst. Fire Chief Brian Burkeen of Indian River County Fire Rescue said the fire was reduced to a line of brush, but fire crews were still attempting to contain it further.
“We have a couple acres, heavily wooded with a bunch of piles of stumps. We’re trying to contain it, but the heavy wind and vegetation is making it a little tough,” Burkeen said.
Burkeen added he was most concerned about the fire’s threat to Safari Golf, a miniature golf complex located on Oslo Rd.
The vision of smoke was impressive enough to draw civilian attention before fire crews arrived to the scene.
“I saw a huge plume of smoke, and what looked like ash falling from the sky,” said Ryne Friedman of Vero Beach, who pulled off the road when he noticed the smoke.
A fire engine was stationed near the homes located west of the fire as a precaution, but Burkeen said no residential areas were in immediate danger.
