INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is the recipient of the CALEA Accreditation with Excellence Award. The Sheriff’s Office received the Accreditation with Excellence Award in addition to its eighth accreditation award by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) at the CALEA conference in Garden Grove, Calif., on March 23.
The CALEA Accreditation with Excellence Award recognizes agencies for their effective use of accreditation as a model for the delivery of enhanced public safety services and management professionalism.
Selection of Accreditation with Excellence Award agencies is based primarily on the agency’s past awards, current assessment and overall professional standing in the public safety community. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office was chosen as an Accreditation with Excellence Agency based on a flawless on-site assessment consisting of no non-compliance issues, no applied discretion and no file maintenance issues regarding any of the 482 accreditation standards the agency demonstrated compliance with during the December 2013 on-site assessment.
The Sheriff’s Office also portrayed sound procedures and practice regarding life, safety, and security throughout the agency and service community.
Maintaining the agency’s accredited status is a process which also strengthens crime prevention; formalizes management procedures; establishes fair and nondiscriminatory personnel practices; improves service delivery; strengthens interagency cooperation and coordination; and increases community and personnel confidence in the agency.
Currently there are over 1,000 agencies internationally that are in the CALEA accreditation process. During the intense CALEA Commission review, the CALEA Commissioners stated they were highly impressed with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and the overall professionalism of the agency and its members which is contributed to the leadership by Sheriff Deryl Loar.
The 21-member Commission is composed of 12 law enforcement professionals and 9 representatives from the public and private sectors.
There are 386 law enforcement agencies in the State of Florida and there are only 50 law enforcement agencies within the state who are currently law enforcement accredited through CALEA. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office was one of ninety-five agencies across the country to be recognized at the Garden Grove, California awards banquet.
