Egle Phillips, 102, of Sebastian, passed away on Feb. 18, 2014.
She is survived by two sons, Donald George (Andrina), and Stuart Paul; two grandsons, Bruce (Debra), and John (Elaine); five great-grandchildren, Bonnie Phillips Neptune (Joey), Mark, Lauren, Kayleigh, and Sharon Phillips.
She was born on Aug. 17, 1911, in Queens, N.Y., to Romano and Matilde Montavani. She grew up with sister, Armanda, and brother, Gino, and went to public school and Italian school in her childhood years. She later went to secretarial school and then met and won the heart of a young Scotsman, George Phillips.
They wed on Dec. 29, 1933, and had 61 years together. They raised their two sons in Queens, N.Y.
Phillips sang in the choir and was secretary of Hollis Woods Community Church. They retired to North Carolina and then to Sebastian, where she was a charter member of Sebastian First Presbyterian Church. She was also active in the First Presbyterian’s Martha Cirlce and with painting beautiful pictures of birds and scenery for family and friends.
After Hurricane Jean, Phillips moved to be with her sister, Mandy, at Buena Vida Retirement Center, in Melbourne, where she enjoyed games, dining entertainment, and the good life with all the Buena Vida residents and staff members. In Melbourne she attended Calvary Chapel Melbourne where she especially loved the worship music and the preaching.
The family extends special thanks to all the staff and residents fo Buena Vida for their love and care in the last nine years. Particular thanks to the staff on the third floor of the assisted living center, whom we have come to know and love these last few months. We also wish to thank Hospice of St. Francis for making Phillips’ last days peaceful. Special appreciation goes to her two church families, Sebastian First Presbyterian Church and Calvary Chapel, Melbourne, for representing Jesus and supporting Phillips in faith hope, and love.
A memorial service will be held at Buena Vida’s Chapel, 2129 West New Haven, in Melbourne,on Monday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Benevolence Fund of Calvary Chapel Melbourne, to the Memorial Fund of First Presbyterian Church, Sebastian, or to Hospice of St. Francis in Melbourne.
