INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Indian River County students will not be in the classroom for Good Friday next school year or Veterans Day, the School Board decided Tuesday night when it approved the 2014-15 instructional calendar.
The calendar was approved with a 4-1 vote. School Board member Matt McCain was the lone dissenter.
Last year, students were in school on the holiday and some questioned the School District’s decision.
Commissioner Joe Flescher, who gave a speech at the Sebastian Veterans Day ceremony, told those who gathered that it was a shame the students couldn’t have had the day off today to attend the ceremony for themselves.
“We need to have the children here,” Flescher said.
School Board member Claudia Jimenez thanked the committee responsible for crafting the instructional calendar and added a special thanks for accommodating Veterans Day.
“It’s not an easy job to put an instructional calendar together,” Schools Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams said, adding that it is essentially impossible to please all people.
This article was updated to correctly reflect the holiday schedule. The article erroneously reported that students would be in school for Good Friday. Students, however, will not be in school on the holiday due to it falling on the last day of Spring Break. VeroNews.com regrets the error.
