VERO BEACH — Another attempt at generating revenue to boost the Vero Beach Parks and Recreation Commission was denied on Tuesday at the City Council meeting.
Council voted unanimously to establish a new fee structure, as recommended by staff, but then voted unanimously to reject new fees on pavilions in public parks as recommended by the recreation department.
“I think parks are for the people and I think people should be able to use public facilities without paying a fee,” said Mayor Dick Winger.
Councilman Craig Fletcher also expressed concern that tracking fees and pavilion reservations would cost more than the revenue generated by the fees.
Rejection of the pavilion fees comes on the heels of a related Council vote-down. Council members recently halted pursuit of a pay for parking program at city beaches along Ocean Drive after the program received opposition from the community.
As the Parks and Recreation Commission continues to search for ways to generate much-needed revenue, it received a bit of encouragement at Tuesday’s meeting.
“Please do not be discouraged,” said Councilwoman Pilar Turner. “And keep bringing forward ideas.”
