Clay and Canvas: Three perspectives show at Tiger Lily

VERO BEACH — Works in ceramic and oil paintings by Sean Clinton, Ellen Fischer, and René Guerin will be featured during the month of October at Tiger Lily Art Studios and Gallery in Vero Beach.

A reception for the exhibition will be held on Friday, Oct. 4, from 5-8 p.m. to coincide with the First Friday Gallery Stroll in downtown Vero Beach.

Tiger Lily Studios and Art Gallery is located at 1903 14th Ave. in Vero Beach. The exhibition will continue through Nov. 3.

Sean Clinton is a ceramics artist who will be showing sculpture based on vessel forms. The exhibition at Tiger Lily will feature his work in raku, a pottery firing technique in which the pieces are removed from the kiln and immersed in a bed of combustible material, sawdust or shredded paper, while still red hot.

Contemporary potters favor the technique, which originated in medieval Japan, for its unpredictably beautiful effects, including iridescent lusters, crazing, and smoke staining. Clinton will also show examples of his miniature teapots, a perennial favorite with those who collect his work.

Ellen Fischer will exhibit her oil paintings of Florida landscape, including seascapes as seen from Vero’s beaches and rural Treasure Coast landscapes. Fischer has become locally known for her work en plein air, that is, painted out-of-doors in nature.

Her work, which has been described as “eclectic, colorful, and bold,” represents glimpses of such well-loved places as Indian River County’s Treasure Hammock Ranch, Blue Cypress Lake, and the sugar sand dunes of St. Lucie County.

René Guerin is showing her recent oil paintings inspired by drawings, memory, and imagination as well as several of her ceramic sculptures of animals.

A native of Vero Beach, Guerin has been called “a painter’s painter,” whose portrayal of the flora, fauna, and people of her home state marry empathy for her subjects with a keen eye and confident brushwork. Her clay animals on display are well-observed and gently humorous depictions of dogs, horses, and pigs.

Tiger Lily Art Studios and Gallery is owned and operated by a group of professional women artists: Julia Carter, Donna Dodderidge, Shotsi Cain Lajoie, Travis Blanton, Sharon Sexton, and Glenda Taylor, whose studios and works in progress are on display during the gallery’s regular hours.

With a mission to support and encourage the creative process as a collective group, Tiger Lily Studios and Gallery occasionally hosts exhibitions of the work of guest artists in addition to featuring its resident artists’ work in painting, pottery, sculpture, and mixed media.
