INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Medical Center announced today it was eliminating 39 positions and taking a variety of other measures to cut $10 million from next year’s budget.
The hospital said health care reform, including lower Medicare reimbursement rates and Florida’s decision not to expand Medicaid, were forcing IRMC to change its business model.
IRMC CEO Jeff Susi said no bedside nurses were among the 39 current hospital employees being let go, and said all those whose jobs were eliminated are being encouraged to apply for other hospital positions.
In June, IRMC announced it was laying off 21 employees.
“Maintaining high quality patient care and safety remains IRMC’s top priority,” Susi said. “None of these decisions are made easily. Health care reform is changing the way we do business.”
