Local art teachers in the Lighthouse spotlight

VERO BEACH — Rarely do teachers get the credit they deserve, and it is certainly rarer that they are compensated proportionately to the very important job that they do.

That’s even truer in the arts categories, as many systems make art the poor sister to the academic disciplines. Yet art is just as important a part of any well rounded student’s education.

The arts can not only expand a student’s viewpoint but also spur creative thinking. That’s why Lighthouse Art and Framing has decided to honor the wonderful arts teachers in our local school system by continuing our annual summer show featuring these talented front line warriors.

Ramayana Baba and Anthony Kopp of Indian River Charter High School will be featured in this year’s homage to the art educators of Indian River County in the “Lighthouse Art and Framing Annual Teacher Show” on view through the month of August.

Mr. Baba graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a BFA in Art Education, and later received an MA in Special Education from Florida Atlantic University. Baba studied under numerous noted artists, including Peter Voulkos and Ron Nagle at UC Berkeley.

Baba has been teaching elementary and high school ceramics classes for more then 20 years and played an active role in the development of the ceramics department at IRCHS. Baba is a working artist with a vast portfolio of ceramics works.

Mr. Kopp is a veteran of the US Armed Forces, having joined the Army directly out of high school and serving over 5 years before being honorably discharged with multiple achievement awards.

After his military service, Kopp attended Ohio State University where he graduated Suma Cum Laude with a BA in Art Education. Now, Kopp is a seasoned educator with over 14 years of teaching experience in both public and private schools.

Lighthouse Art and Framing’s gallery will be open for the viewing of the “Annual Teacher Show” from Aug. 1-30.

Summer hours for the gallery are Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
