CAMERA: Bad things happen when you hurry

Sometimes hurrying doesn’t pay, especially when you forget to close up a camera bag.

During coverage of one of the recent shootings in Gifford I found myself at a secondary crime scene instead of the main scene.

In the course of covering the event, I switched lenses  – putting my 80-200 mm on and taking off my wide angle.

Usually I’m not in a hurry because I’ve grown accustom to working during these situations, but when I found out I had to rush, I didn’t realize my hip bag wasn’t zipped up.

So, when I went to put my gear in the car I heard a thud on the ground behind me and just slowly closed my eyes.

There lay on a gravel road, no less, was my wide angle lens.

But, thankfully I lucked out; it was only dinged up a little. Nothing else was wrong with it.

Be it a crime scene or your kid’s first trip to the zoo, it does not pay to hurry. Think ahead, prepare, and be set, and then you won’t have to hurry – at least, until the unexpected happens and you’re forced to.

That’s when a little luck doesn’t hurt.
