VIRGINIA — The Vero Beach Police Department is proud to announce that Lieutenant Matthew Monaco, a 15 year veteran with the Vero Beach Police Department graduated with the class.
While attending the academy Lieutenant Monaco also earned the following outstanding achievement awards:
Yellow Brick Award – This award represents a weekly physical challenge, which culminates with a 6.2 mile run through the Marine Corp obstacle course.
Blue Brick Award – This award is given to participants who complete a 34 mile swim challenge program, which represents the distance between Quantico, Va. And Washington, D.C. 300 mile Team Challenge award – This award is given to a five member team that completes a 300 mile swim over the course of ten weeks.
Lieutenant Monaco is the first Vero Beach Police Department officer to receive the Blue Brick and 300 mile Team Challenge awards.
On March 22, 2013 two hundred sixty-eight law enforcement officers graduated from the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Virginia. The 252nd Session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 49 states. Included in the class were members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Columbia, 27 international countries, four military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations.
Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy, offers 10 weeks of advanced investigative, management, and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals within their agencies. On average, these officers have 19 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.
Training for the program is provided by the FBI Academy instructional staff, Special Agents, and other staff members holding advanced degrees, many of whom are recognized internationally in their fields of expertise.
Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia due to the accreditation by the university of the many courses offered.
The graduating class was represented by the class spokesperson, Captain David L. Allen, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, in Raleigh N.C. A total of 46,610 graduates now represent the FBI National Academy since it began in July 1935. Of this number, approximately 29,097 are still active in law enforcement work.
