SEBASTIAN — A 36-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after police said he attacked another man and woman with a weapon Friday in a residential area. Officers said the 44-year-old man who was attacked suffered serious bodily injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The 34-year-old woman who was attacked suffered minor injuries. Though the Indian River County Jail website lists "second-degree murder" as a charge for suspect Daniel Fontanez, Sebastian police Chief Tim Wood clarified that nobody has died. "There is no known risk of public safety at this time as it relates to this incident." Fontanez, of the 200 block of Harp Terrace, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, criminal attempt, burglary of an occupied conveyance and battery. Fontanez was held Saturday at the Indian River County Jail without bond. Sebastian police responded to reports of a disturbance in the 200 block of Periwinkle Drive, south of Barber Street and west of U.S. 1. Officers said Fontanez used a weapon to batter the other man, leaving him seriously injured. Fontanez also struck the woman with the weapon. The badly injured man was flown to a medical facility, police said. "The investigation is still active and out of respect for those directly involved/impacted by this event, there is no further information available at this time," police said.
