SEBASTIAN — The Sebastian Police Department is investigating two separate cases of attempted child abductions in the city, one of which involved an impersonation of a police officer. The other incident occurred in the parent pick-up loop at Sebastian Elementary.
Neither child in the two separate incidents got into the would-be abductor’s vehicle.
The Sebastian Police Department is asking all parents and citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons, vehicles or acts by dialing 911.
A 10-year-old girl was riding her bicycle home from Sebastian Elementary around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the area of Sebastian Boulevard and Easy Street when a man pulled up in a vehicle beside her claiming to be a police officer, according to the Sebastian Police Department.
The man displayed a silver star badge, which the girl told authorities looked like a toy. She refused when he told her she needed to get in the car with him. He then drove away.
According to the police, the man is black, possibly bald, with a medium build and was wearing a blue shirt. He was driving an unknown model royal blue car.
On Thursday, another child was approached by a man with a similar description – this time in the parent pick-up loop of Sebastian Elementary School, according to the Sebastian Police Department.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when a black male, approximately 40 years old with a buzz cut, asked a 9-year-old girl to get into his car. During the incident, the man pointed his finger and thumb as if he were imitating a firearm, the police department said.
The man was wearing a red, white and blue striped shirt and beige pants.
The child refused to get into the man’s car and, instead, began to walk away. She watched the man get into an unknown model navy blue 4-door medium size sedan and drive north on Powerline Road.
The girl told authorities that she believed the first letter of the license plate was a “K.”
Detectives and officers are continuing their investigation of these reports and are making contact with any subjects and vehicles that are similar to these descriptions.
