VERO BEACH — The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVBIRC) is pleased to announce that it was recently awarded a $2,000 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to help its equine protection efforts.
Awarded in late July, the funds were used to recently construct additional pasture fencing around the shelter’s barn area. The barn currently houses three horses who will eventually be placed for adoption.
According to HSVBIRC Director of Animal Protection Ilka Daniel, the county’s economy has resulted in a greater number of people who are struggling to care for their horses.
“We are so thankful to the ASPCA for this grant,” Daniel said. “Our horses are now able to graze and exercise in enough space for them to become physically and mentally healthy,” she added.

The Humane Society will gladly accept any donations from the public for horse feed or supplies. Monetary donations can be made by calling the shelter at (772) 388-3331 ext. 26, while donations of feed and supplies can be brought to the shelter, located at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach.
