SEBASTIAN — Breast cancer survivors, volunteers, and participants will unite for an inspirational kickoff reception as part of the second year of the “Put On Your Pink Bra” campaign for the 9th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.
Making Strides is a noncompetitive 5K walk to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer and to provide hope to all people facing the disease.
The walk will be held at Riverview Park in Sebastian in October. Anyone interested in forming a team is welcome to the kickoff reception on August 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Capt. Hiram’s.

The “Put On Your Pink Bra” campaign is designed to empower women across the state to wear pink bras in support of the fight against breast cancer and as a personal symbol of their breast cancer journeys.
The 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is presented by the Sebastian River Medical Center. Steven Salyer, CEO (see photo) is taking up the fight against breast cancer, and employees throughout the hospital are joining him as several departments are planning fundraising teams.
The kickoff reception will include a message from Lin Reading, a breast cancer survivor, and Dr. Nancy Baker from Primary Care of the Treasure Coast, who will share a synopsis of the strides we have already made in the fight against breast cancer, including the preventative impact of genetic testing.
Interviews will be available with local American Cancer Society staff, volunteers, cancer survivors, and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer participants.
