INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Schools Superintendent Dr. Fran Adams has established two new administrative positions while trying to fill 10 other openings due to retirements and resignations. The School Board unanimously approved the superintendent’s organizational chart, which takes effect for the 2012-13 school year. Dr. Adams created a position called Coordinator of Title I, III and X and another called Coordinator of Staff Development. Both positions will be paid for using federal dollars through the Title programs.
The Title I, III and X coordinator will report directly to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction while the staff development coordinator will report to the Executive Director of Core Curriculum, under the curriculum assistant superintendent, according to the new organizational chart.
“The assessment program is pretty much taking over,” Dr. Adams said, explaining why the formally one position was split into two.
The Coordinator of Staff Development will be responsible for providing support and training for district employees, which is “becoming more and more imperative,” she said.
Dr. Adams told the School Board that the two positions are considered “entry-level” and are meant to develop future administrators who could fill higher internal positions as they become available.
As it is, the district has 10 open administrative positions Dr. Adams is working to fill and has been undergoing numerous interviews to that end.
“This hasn’t created a ripple effect,” Dr. Adams said. “It’s created a tsunami.”
She explained that as one staff member moves to another position, that staff member’s position then becomes open.
School Board members did not debate the changes to the organizational chart.
Vice Chair Carol Johnson said she was pleased with Dr. Adams’ chart.
“I think it’s long range planning at its best,” she said.
In other School Board action Tuesday evening, the board unanimously approved renewing the $6,731 contract for Schoolhouse Consulting Group, which represents Treasure Coast school districts to the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council.
The School Board also approved an agreement with the Environmental Learning Center to provide services to third and fourth grade students this next school year at a cost of $325 per third grade class and $508 per fourth grade class.
The Code of Student Conduct was also unanimously approved at the School Board meeting, as was the refund of more than $179,000 to Barth Construction from its repairs to the Citrus Bowl at Vero Beach High School.
