INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Marine Resources Council will be featured on an upcoming episode on the Discovery Channel. The organization has been working for the last 25 years to promote education and preservation of the Indian River Lagoon. It will be the focus of the Profiles series on Discovery May 11 at 7 a.m., discussing the Marine Resources Council’s restoration efforts of the lagoon.
Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr. is the host of the show and included in the upcoming episode are Dr. Grant Gilmore, Jim Egan, and Captain Rodney Smith.
Dr. Gilmore is a renowned expert in the field of fisheries biology. His piece was recorded on the shoreline of the Sebastian River explaining the important connection between native plants and fish habitat.
Jim Egan, the executive director of the Marine Resources Council, will be shown at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge demonstrating, along with a small army of council volunteers, how to plant mangroves – a way the average person can make a difference by restoring shoreline habitat.
And Captain Rodney Smith, of Coastal Angler Magazine, will explain the benefits of a healthy restored fishery.
