VERO BEACH — Thanks to the generosity of the Majestic Theatre, located on US 1 in Vero Beach, CenterState Bank of Vero Beach and Fort Pierce, and Richard K. Davis Construction Company of Fort Pierce, Save the Chimps (STC) is ready to embark on a very special, family-oriented fundraiser and an awareness event for the STC Sanctuary.
Every year, Disneynature, the nature documentary arm of Disney, releases a new movie in theaters showing the beauty of our world and the animals in it. This year they’ll be showing Chimpanzee, a documentary about an adorable three-year-old chimp nicknamed Oscar who is raised as an orphan (and caught on camera).
Scheduled for Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m., the movie will include a pre-show eight minute video on the history of the Ft. Pierce sanctuary and a question and answer period with STC’s sanctuary director and veterinarian Jen Feurerstein and Jocelyn Bezner immediately following the movie.
For the ticket price of $10 for children (12 and under) and $20 for adults, patrons can also enjoy popcorn, soda, a raffle ticket and special giveaways. Raffle items include a private tour for 6 at Save The Chimps, the world’s largest sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees, original chimp art and free movie tickets courtesy of the Majestic.
The piece de resistance raffle prize will no doubt be the opportunity to Shadow a Vet for a Day at the sanctuary to learn about the chimp’s health issues, husbandry and social habits. It will be topped off by a complimentary lunch with the sanctuary director and veterinary staff as they discuss cases.
Save the Chimps was established in 1997 in response to the U.S. Air Force’s announcement that it was ending its chimpanzee research activities. Save the Chimps eventually gained permanent custody of 21 chimps, survivors and descendants of those captured in Africa in the 1950s and used in the original NASA “chimpanaut” program.
Since then, the organization has also rescued many chimpanzees being used for biomedical research, entertainment and the pet trade.
Proceeds from this special screening will benefit the 274 chimpanzees living in permanent sanctuary at Save the Chimps.
This fundraiser will surely be a one-time only, educational, fun-filled family event.
