INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Indian River Charter High School, the only public school to offer Chinese in Indian River County, sent a group of students to compete in the Annual Florida Statewide Chinese Competition, offering students an opportunity to test and understand their Chinese literacy levels.
“It was rather daring, but I had a good time nonetheless,” explained IRCHS Level 3 Chinese Student Lydia Chapman. “It was an eye-opening, learning experience.”
“I had a lot of fun at the Chinese Competition. It got me excited to go back to school and learn more Chinese,” added Skye McPherson, one of two Charter students to receive Superior ratings.
Eleven students traveled from Vero Beach to Fort Lauderdale, where Pine Crest School hosted the event.
The competition tested students’ speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Chinese Teacher Liming Tang traveled with her students to the event where students also had a chance to experience Chinese culture.
“It was quite a challenging experience to students and to me as well. I am very glad that we could have this opportunity,” said Tang.
Indian River Charter High School scored well for their second year of competition, scoring 2-superior; 3-outstanding; 3-excellent; and 5-good.
