Indian River Tennis Foundation promoting youth programs

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY —The Indian River Tennis Foundation is gearing up for another successful year of promoting junior tennis in Indian River County. The Indian River Tennis Foundation (IRTF) was founded in 2006 and is a 501(C) (3) non-profit foundation. The funds raised are earmarked for various junior tennis programs such as: sending needy kids to summer tennis camps, providing funds for kids to train at local facilities, providing college scholarship money to local high school graduates, donating to all the county high school tennis programs, and providing free clinics to all USTA Junior Team Tennis members.

The new season kicks off Feb. 21 with a party at the Grand Harbor Golf Club at 6 p.m. with guest speaker John Lloyd. John reached the finals of the Australian Open in 1977 losing in 5 sets to Vitas Gerulaitus. In 1978, he reached his highest ranking of #21.

In 1979, John married Chris Evert and they became the “Golden Couple” of tennis before an eventual divorce. Following that, John coached and worked as a television commentator. John became the Davis Cup Captain of Great Britain in 2006 thru 2010 and still remains active in the tennis world.

The organization looks forward to having John in a Q&A format with Gary Kitchell, which in no doubt, will be funny and entertaining.

The exhibition series, played at Grand Harbor, begins Friday, March 2 and continues for eight consecutive weeks. The organization is working on another premier event to finish the season on April 20, 2012.
