VERO BEACH — The second lecture of the Vero Beach Museum of Art’s 2012 International Lecture Series is Funny Side Up! presented by artist, author, and humorist Jules Feiffer. The lecture takes place on Monday, Feb. 20.
This ILS presentation takes place in the Museum’s Leonhardt Auditorium, with two presentations-one at 4 p.m. and a second at 6 p.m.
A light wine reception with an opportunity to meet the speaker bridges the two presentations and takes place at 5 p.m., following the speaker’s first presentation. The reception will take place in the new Laura and Bill Buck Atrium in the Wahlstrom Sculpture Garden.
About the Lecture: Join Jules Feiffer in this humorous survey of cartoons focusing on politics, sex, families, and the rise of miscommunication as a social necessity and art form – all acted out with running commentary.
Born into a world of newspaper strips and influenced by the new invention of the comic book, Feiffer applied his honed skills of visual humor and escapism in a more serious direction: writing and drawing satiric commentaries on present-day life.
Kidnapping the comic strip to talk about themes discussed privately but seldom in public print, Feiffer became renowned for his sharp insight into the increasingly common use of language to hide, obscure, and manipulate meaning, rather than communicate. An unforgettable evening of memories and laughs for all.
About Jules Feiffer: Cartoonist, playwright, screenwriter and children’s book author and illustrator Jules Feiffer was born on January 26, 1929 in New York City. He has had a remarkable creative career turning contemporary urban anxiety into witty and revealing commentary for over fifty years.
From his Village Voice editorial cartoons to his plays and screenplays including Little Murders and Carnal Knowledge, Feiffer’s satirical outlook has helped define us politically, sexually, and socially.
The first cartoonist commissioned by The New York Times to create comic strips for their Op-Ed page, Feiffer has since shifted his focus towards writing and illustrating books for children and young adults including The Man in the Ceiling, A Room with a Zoo and Bark, George!
He won a Pulitzer Prize and a George Polk Award for his cartoons; an Obie for his plays; an Academy Award for the animation of his cartoon satire, Munro; and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Writers Guild of America and the National Cartoonist Society.
Feiffer has taught at the Yale School of Drama, Northwestern University, Dartmouth, and presently at Stony Brook Southampton College. He has been honored with major retrospectives at the New York Historical Society, the Library of Congress and The School of Visual Arts.
