Sheriff: Escaped inmate Taylor surrendered ‘peacefully’

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Escaped convicted murderer Leviticus Taylor surrendered to law enforcement “peacefully” Monday night, Sheriff Deryl Loar said Tuesday morning. Taylor was found in Jensen Beach, where he was apprehended and taken back to the Indian River County Jail.

Taylor is being interviewed by investigators regarding the escape, which occurred sometime between 12:30 and 4:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24. Sheriff Loar did not elaborate on the information Taylor was providing.

The Sheriff’s Office is pushing forward to find and apprehend the second inmate who escaped, now-52-year-old Rondell Reed.

Today is Reed’s birthday, Sheriff Loar noted.

“There would be nothing better than arresting him on his birthday,” the sheriff said.

Reed is considered very dangerous. It is not known if he has weapons, but he has been involved in a shoot-out with law enforcement in the past.

Monday evening, the Sheriff’s Office arrested two women who admitted to helping Taylor escape Indian River County by providing transportation south into Martin County.

Sheriff Loar said more arrests could be possible as the investigation into the jailbreak continues.

The women, Sadie Welker, 19, and 35-year-old Angela Pike, told investigators they arranged to pick up Taylor at a nearby apartment complex.

Pike told investigators she had tried to get a bus ticket to New Jersey for Taylor.

The Sheriff’s Office used social media, among other methods, to find Welker and Pike.

“We were able to connect the dots,” Sheriff Loar said without elaborating on how social media played a role.

The Sheriff’s Office expects to provide an update later today.
