SEBASTIAN — The Sebastian Natural Resources Board plans to help out Keep Indian River Beautiful later this month by cleaning up the spoil islands in the lagoon, but the group needs the public’s help.
The board discussed the International Coastal Cleanup – an annual cleanup event focused on picking up trash in waterways and along the shores – at its regular meeting Tuesday evening.
Board Chair Robin Graves said it is important to participate in the cleanup because it helps to keep the islands usable, clean and fun to go visit.
“It’s a fun day,” she said, not of the trash pickup but of being out in the sun and getting closer to nature.
“You get a free boat ride and get out of the office,” Graves added.
The crew holds four island cleanups each year and the International Coastal Cleanup is one they participate in.
“You find the really gross stuff,” she said, recalling that during one cleanup they found a port-a-potty that had been used on an island and left behind.
They’ve also found boat bows and hulls, floating docks and chairs.
Miller said much of the trash and debris found during the cleanups are items that are simply left behind.
Anyone interested in helping out during the International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 17 can meet the Sebastian Natural Resources Board at the Main Street Boat Ramp – at the corner of Main Street and Indian River Drive – at 8 a.m.
