VERO BEACH – The Wabasso Island-based Environmental Learning Center is one of 500 finalists in Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program, which will award vehicles to 100 nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public.
Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program will showcase five non-profit organizations each day for 100 days on Toyota’s Facebook page, facebook.com/toyota. Visitors to the page can vote once a day for the organization that they feel is most deserving of a new Toyota vehicle.
The Environmental Learning Center will be one of the five organizations highlighted for voting on May 28.
Local residents are encouraged to support the ELC and their quest for a new Toyota Prius. If ELC receives the most votes and is awarded the vehicle, it will be used to exponentially extend its mission through outreach opportunities. The ELC will take its learning experiences on the road to preschools, public schools, senior centers, county parks and state preserves, bringing an environmental stewardship message to multiple generations beyond the confines of its 64-acre campus.
As one of the leading environmental organizations in the area, the ELC selected the Prius because of its high-energy efficiency and its complement to the new green-certified buildings on ELC’s campus.
The Environmental Learning Center provides experiential opportunities for children and adults to learn about the delicate balance of eco-systems in the Indian River County area. Located on the Indian River Lagoon, the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, ELC encourages exploration and appreciation for the flora and fauna of our region.
Its mission is to provide comprehensive environmental education that will instill an understanding of our natural world and will motivate participants to be active stewards of our natural resources. Through hands-on learning adventures provided by the staff and 100 volunteers, ELC demonstrates the importance of interconnections in the environment and how individual actions directly affect the environment.
