John H. Schmidt, 88, died March 14, 2011, at his home.
He was born in Queens, N.Y., and lived in Vero Beach for 20 years, coming from New York.
Before retirement, he was employed by the New York Transit system and was proprietor of Schmidt’s Candies and Ice Cream in Richmond Hill, N.Y.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member and officer of Indian River Right to Life and a past president of the Homeowners Association of Fairlane Harbor.
Survivors include his daughters, Dolores, of East Norwich, N.Y., Eileen, of Alexandria, Va., Mary, of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Theresa, of Fort Salonga, N.Y.; sons, John, of Vero Beach and Edward, of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Rita, in 1995.

Services will be in New York and internment at Pinelawn National Cemetery of Long Island.
A local memorial and celebration of his life will be announced at a future date.
