Paul Lewis Higgins, 65, Vero Beach

Paul Lewis Higgins, 65, died Jan. 20, 2011, at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach.

He was born in New London, Conn., and lived in Vero Beach for three years, coming from Maryland.

He retired as a sergeant with the Prince Georges County Corrections in Maryland.

He was a member of the American Legion in Chesapeake Beach, Md., and the D.C. Hand Dance Club in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Suzanne Higgins, of Vero Beach and Maryland; daughters, Alicia Burnham and Paula Higgins, both of Silver Spring, Md., and Eileen Eskandari, of Odessa; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at a later date in Maryland.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Howle, Zudans win in Vero; Kinchen, McPartlan, Iovino in Sebastian

All results are in for the Vero Beach and Sebastian municipal elections. Voters have returned Harry Howle to the Vero Beach Council and Bob McPartlan and Linda Kinchen to the Sebastian Council. Val Zudans will join Howle on the Vero Council, while Albert Iovino will round out the last of three seats up for grabs on the Sebastian Council.
