VERO BEACH – Vero Beach dominated time of possession against Bayside in the district semi-finals en route to a 3-0 win.
Second-year VBHS coach Chris Fonehouse gave credit to his defense for allowing his team to control the game.
“I thought our back three – Danny King, Kevin O’Dell, and Adam Shields – along with our goalie, Austin Shields, played great gamse tonight,” Fonehouse said. “They kept a clean slate back there and allowed our to develop. If (Bayside) would have gotten a quick counter it would have been a different game, but they never gave their offense a chance to capitalize.”
Midfielder Adriano Bordoli scored at 29:35 in the first period, when he dribbled between two defenders and beat the Bayside goalie to break the scoreless deadlock.
The Indians scored again at 24:07 in the second period when midfielder Samuel Hudson took a pass at midfield, raced past a Bayside defender, and found the upper-left corner of the net for the goal.
Vero Beach had several more opportunities to score in the second half, bouncing several kicks from point-blank range off the face of the goal.
Fonehouse said his team needs to make the most of their scoring opportunities when they play Treasure Coast in Wednesday’s district final.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the back of the net in spite of numerous opportunities,” said Fonehouse. “The game plan went well but we didn’t capitalize when we should have. (VBHS forward) Forrest Fegert had a great game but he was hitting the crossbar right and left.”
Forward Lovener Luma scored at 39:55 in the second period of a blocked attempt by Fegert for a late insurance goal.
Vero Beach faces high-scoring forward Johnathan Quintero and Treasure Coast at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in the semi-finals on the way to a district title.
