VERO BEACH — The community-wide, nondenominational Social Justice Film Series continues on Sunday, November 14, at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach with the 2001 documentary Promises. The film focuses on interviews with both Palestinian and Israeli children, giving a human face to Middle East conflict. The discussion following the film will be led by Nancy Stiefel. The series is free and open to the public, with no reservations or tickets required. The Fair Trade Corner will be open one-half hour before and after the film.
Filmed in 1997, 1998 and 2000 — a period of comparative calm, Promises is about seven children between the ages of nine and thirteen who live on the West Bank and in Jerusalem. They are in geographical proximity but on either side of a political and cultural gulf that’s manned by checkpoints and reinforced by violence.
Directed by B.Z. Goldberg, Justine Shapiro and Carlos Bolado, the film suggests that, for all the turbulence, the vast majority of people on both sides not only want to get along but also are willing to make concessions and work at it. Most of these people are not extremists.
Promises was nominated for Best Documentary Oscar at the 2002 Academy Awards, and won 12 other awards at the Emmys and various film festivals.
