INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Polls have opened today in Indian River County, allowing registered voters the opportunity to cast their ballots in several races, including the Board of County Commissioners and the School Board of Indian River County.
Check back here starting at 7 p.m. for elections results and reactions. Florida is a closed primary state, meaning that only those registered with a political party can vote for that party’s candidates in the primary.
In Indian River County, that means about 43,300 registered Republicans and 27,400 Democrats can participate the primary. Another 19,300 voters registered as something else might have to wait for November’s general election – unless their party is represented in the primary.
Offices up for election in the primary include two County Commission districts, three School Board districts and a handful of state and national posts.
Those posts include US Senator, for which Marco Rubio, Gov. Charlie Crist, Kendrick Meek, among others, are running; Florida Governor, Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, and Commissioner of Agriculture, and Florida House of Representatives Districts 29 and 80.
Voters should bring identification that contains a photo and a signature, such as a Florida driver’s license, passport, student ID or debit/credit card with photo.
Those voters who do not have proper identification will be required to vote via provisional ballot. Voters must go to their assigned polling places, which can be found either on their Voter Information Card, on the Elections Office website by clicking on “Precinct Finder,” or by calling the Elections Office.
Many polling locations within Indian River County have been consolidated in order to conform to budget cuts.
All voters affected by polling place changes have been notified by the Supervisor of Elections.
