SEBASTIAN – The Sebastian City Council will meet tonight to help Mayor Richard Gillmor craft a vision plan for Indian River County as they’d like to see it in 2020.
Mayor Gillmor, along with the mayors of the county’s other four municipalities, have been tasked with creating a plan from their individual perspectives to see if they have similar ideas about the county.
The idea came up at the Mayors Meeting, which was held earlier this month.
Gillmor has asked that the council help in deciding what the City of Sebastian would like the county have or be like in the year 2020.
The mayors are supposed to provide copies of their plans to each other by May 1 so that they have time to review them before their next meeting in June.
Also at the workshop, the Sebastian Council is expected to discuss the status of and possible future recreation and construction projects.
The workshop comes amidst city staff working out the budget for the next fiscal year. Both recreation and major construction projects are funded through special sources, including the Recreation Impact Fees and the Discretionary Sales Tax.
Such projects the city has funded through those sources include roadwork, drainage, sidewalks, the median along County Road 512, and lighting at the Barber Street Sports Complex.
Future projects the city is considering funding through the recreation fees include fountains at parks, amenities for the Sebastian Bark Park, and irrigation and lighting at various parks.
The workshop is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., after a Community Redevelopment Agency meeting. During that meeting, which begins at 6 p.m., the council is expected to approve two requests from redevelopment area businesses for new signs.
Southern Sisters Café and Maxwell Plumbing are asking for up to $7,500 each for new signs along US 1. Maxwell Plumbing is also asking for another $7,500 for fencing and landscaping.
Southern Sisters Café also has plans to install a new awning and more landscaping to improve the restaurant’s appearance. In all, the restaurant is looking to make more than $23,000 worth of improvements to the site.
Maxwell Plumbing’s plans include the new sign, fresh paint, landscaping, an awning and shutters worth more than $18,000.
After the CRA meeting and workshop, the Sebastian City Council will hold a special meeting to discuss updating the Sebastian Municipal Airport master plan, landscaping along Sebastian Boulevard, the Fourth of July fireworks, and a special event to be held at Riverview Park.
